Found this great article from David Haas about Quality of Like of Cancer Patients using exercise! Check it out!

Improving Quality of Life During Cancer Treatment With Exercise

Although rest and inactivity was once commonly advised by oncologists working patients suffering from mesothelioma and other forms of cancer, studies conducted over the past few years have shown that, when possible, activity can provide a great deal of benefit to cancer patients. Your level of activity or inactivity can affect all fatigue, range of movement, stress and quality of life. To ease the symptoms and side effects associated with cancer treatment, consider some of these exercises to promote a better quality of life as well as physical function.

Water Exercise

Exercising in the water is easier on your joints, yet provides you with the same benefits as other forms of aerobic exercise. Whether you swim, take a water aerobics class, or walk laps in the pool, your weight will be supported by the water’s buoyancy, placing less stress on joints that might be sore due to chemotherapy. Water also has a calming effect, which can help ease stress.

Tai Chi or Yoga

Relieve stress and increase balance with Tai Chi or yoga. The slower movements and deeper breathing involved in both forms of exercise can help you release pent up stress and tension. Both also involve a bit of balance, which is important to ensuring that you don’t fall and get hurt.

Exercising Outdoors

Fresh air, sunshine and exercise are a powerful combination to help you counteract fatigue and feelings of isolation. Whenever you can get outdoors spend 30 minutes doing any form of exercise you enjoy. Choose from walking, bicycle riding or playing ball with a family member. It’s not always the form of exercise that matters as much as it is that you’re moving your body in a way that’s healthy for you.

Light Weightlifting

Balance out aerobic workouts with light weightlifting two or three times per week to maintain your muscle mass. When exercise consists solely of aerobic workouts you can end up losing muscle mass that is important to the range of movement you enjoy, as well as the health of your muscles and bones. Heavy weights should be avoided, but simple two- to three-pound dumbbells can help you maintain healthy, strong muscles.

Before embarking on an exercise plan, be sure to speak with your doctor to determine the types of exercise best for you. Start slowly and don’t push yourself too hard. Physical activity done in short 10-minute spurts is as effective as longer exercise sessions. The point of exercise is to maintain physical conditioning, improve your quality of life while going through cancer treatment and feel better about yourself. When incorporated in a manner that works best for you, a physical activity plan can lead you to feel more empowered to fight back.

What Seperates the Good From The Best

One thing I’ve realized lately, is that if you want to be the best at something you have to constantly improve and ask more of yourself. It’s becoming clear to me that people who are “the best” at something don’t become that way from ever being satisfied with their level of excellence. You have to always want to improve. You have to ask more of yourself. You have to produce better results. Doing this will help you attain whatever you are looking for. If you want to be the best car mechanic or dancer or if you want to build airplanes or rap whatever it is… be the best and when you get there become even more than that!
